How to become a Software Engineer / Computer Scientist

Designs and builds software systems, applications and infrastructure.

What does a Software Engineer / Computer Scientist actually do?

More about this career

Covers building the apps, websites, systems and infrastructure that run on computers and phones – what you actually work on (backend systems, mobile apps, games, data pipelines) varies hugely by job, not by degree. It’s one of the more flexible qualifications here: strong self-taught coders can break in without a CS degree, though a degree still helps for the first job and for more technical roles later.

Where this degree can take you

  • Mobile App Developer
  • DevOps Engineer
  • Cybersecurity Specialist
  • Game Developer

This is our general description of the role and related jobs, not from an official source – it’s here to give you a fuller picture, not as a careers-counselling guarantee.

Subjects that usually help

  • Mathematics
  • Information Technology (if your school offers it)
  • Physical Sciences (helpful)

This is our general guidance about which school subjects suit this career. It is not an admission requirement and not from an official source – the real requirements are on the degrees below.

CUT APS 27 points out of 49

  • English: 50%
  • Mathematics: 40% OR Information Technology: 40% OR Mathematical Literacy: 60%

Found via web search surfacing CUT’s own programme page, not a raw fetch of the full page (blocked in this environment) - re-check against cut.ac.za before relying on it. This resolves an earlier gap where CUT’s IT page returned content for a different qualification. This programme’s figures came through an AI-summarized fetch of the official CUT page rather than a raw read of the page itself - re-verify against cut.ac.za before fully relying on it. No 2027 closing date is stated on CUT’s own pages.

UCT Science Faculty Points Score 660 out of 800 (band a)

  • Mathematics: 70%
  • Physical Sciences: 60%

Band A (guaranteed offer) is an FPS of 660. Band B (likely offer) is a WPS of 640 - the WPS adds a 0-10% disadvantage factor that we cannot work out from your marks, so we only check you against Band A. Band C (550) applies to redress categories only. Confirmed directly from the 2027 prospectus: the Science Faculty admits on these faculty-wide bands (Mathematics 70%+ and Physical Sciences 60%+ for all three bands), then places you into a major - Computer Science (and its associated majors) is one of a handful capacity-limited once you are in, selected on first-year academic performance rather than your entry score. Where Physical Sciences was not taken, Information Technology may substitute for the Computer Science/Business Computing combination specifically.

UKZN APS 33 points out of 48

  • Mathematics: 65%
  • Physical Sciences: 65%
  • English: level 4 (50% or more)
  • Life Orientation: level 4 (50% or more)

The published APS range is 48-33. CONFIRMED 2026-10-02 for every discipline: a user-supplied copy of UKZN’s own Undergraduate Degree Requirements Guide lists Agricultural, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering as one merged table row sharing this exact entry text and APS range - so this is UKZN’s own stated position that all seven share the formula, not just an inference from Agricultural and Chemical’s own pages (both separately confirmed live, 2026-10-02). This comes from the Study@UKZN 2026 brochure, the most recent official source we could find. UKZN had not published a 2027 table when we checked, so treat these as 2026 figures pending a 2027 update. Applications go through the CAO.

UKZN APS 30 points out of 48

  • Mathematics: level 5 (60% or more)
  • English: level 4 (50% or more)
  • Life Orientation: level 4 (50% or more)
  • A science subject – Agricultural Science, Life Sciences or Physical Science at level 4.

CORRECTED 2026-10-02: a prior pass found UKZN’s own School of Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science page (via web search, not a raw fetch) stating English and Life Orientation at level 5, and switched to that figure over the 2026 Study@UKZN brochure’s level 4. A user-supplied copy of UKZN’s own Undergraduate Degree Requirements Guide now gives a third reading, and it agrees with the original brochure: English and Life Orientation at level 4. With two official UKZN documents now saying level 4 against one school-page search result saying level 5, we show level 4 as the majority reading but flag the conflict rather than discard the school page’s figure outright. Mathematics (level 5) and the APS range (48-30) are unchanged across all three sources.
